Mexico: Monitor developments regularly as access restrictions imposed following increased activity at Popocatépetl volcano
Travellers are advised to monitor developments related to the Popocatépetl volcano, which is located in Puebla, Mexico and Morelos states, after the National Center for Prevention of Disasters (CENAPRED) on 14 April warned of an increase in activity at the crater. Ash emitted by the volcano on the previous day fell on San Nicolas de los Ranchos, Huejotzingo and Puebla (all Puebla), prompting the authorities to restrict access within 7.5 miles (12km) of Popocatépetl.
Travel Advice
  • Visitors are advised to factor the exclusion zone into their journeys and avoid the vicinity of Popocatépetl volcano as a precaution.
  • Travellers are advised to comply with all instructions issued by the authorities when in the vicinity of the volcano.
  • The presence of large quantities of ash in the air can impair visibility for pilots and has the potential to damage aircraft engines. Flights at Puebla's Hermanos Serdán International Airport (PBC) and other airports in the region may be affected without warning. Personnel scheduled to undertake air travel to or from the area should reconfirm the status of their flight before setting out.
  • Monitor the local media, CENAPRED's website and our travel security alerts on Mexico for related developments.
